QUESTIONS and ANSWERS

Tell me more about the tests!

Prior to COVID, the local math organization (us) held a very popular annual math contest, targeted mainly at 4th-8th graders (though we also had a great high-school competition!)  We are not only resuming this in 2023, but are making significant changes to reach more classrooms, more teachers, and more students!

What are some of the changes?

We wanted to include more teachers and their classrooms, and the prior format (although popular) made that difficult.  There were several contests per grade-level, for example,  Now, we've combined everything into a single contest which can be taken in 30 minutes - in the classroom!

How exactly would this work?

We've going to make the exam available from February 20th - 24th.  The teacher can access the test anytime in that date window.  Incredible flexibility!  Further, the test is automatically graded on the spot!

Is this a city-wide contest?

Let's call the part just described as the "Classroom Test".  For this contest, all results remain in the classroom, and the students are only competing against students at your school, at the same grade, and in the same class.  It's a great opportunity to let kids have a fresh and fun time, while at the same time giving the teacher relevant - and private - feedback on how their own class is doing!

Are there awards?

Great question!  We will send certificates to each teacher, and leave it to them to distribute to their students on how they see best.  Some may award 1st-3rd place, for example, whilc others may award 1st-10th.  Others may give a certificate to each who chose to compete (remember, this is entirely voluntary!)  There is no city-wide comparison, for this test, because no data is collected!

This sounds amazing!  Now, you've used the word "Individual" and "Classroom" a few times.  Is there a GROUP competition?

There is!  This is Part 2 of the contest, what we call MATHLETICS!  Each school can send 1-2 teams of three students (for each grade level) to compete against other groups from other schools around hte Kansas City area.  This really is "the best against the best" and it's always been an incredibly popular competition!

How are the students selected for Mathletics?

That's up to the teacher (or team leader).  They can use the "Individual / Classroom" test as a gauge who to select, they can use performance in the class, or whatever metric they want, to pick their team.

So teams compete against each other.  Is this online or in person?

The "Individual / Classroom" test in online (but run from the classroom).  The Group (Mathletics) contest is in person.  It's held at Park Hill High School, on April 1, 2023.  There are specific times each grade must show up and compete.  These are listed in the flyers above!

How can teachers find out more?

There's a lot on the site, so play around!  Also, we will be having zoom / online Q&A sessions (listed below).  Call in and ask away!

What does this cost?

The individual / classroom test is FREE!  The group / mathletics contest is $25 per grade level.
